Tree planting

Over the weekend we spent some time with one of our favourite suppliers, Echo Valley Farms. They were having a tree planting morning, which is part of their effort to regenerate their land. They have a wonderful community, so it was great to see a large number of people turn up and get over one hundred trees into the ground!

The tough thing that you can't help but notice is the ongoing impact of the drought on their farm, and on the whole region. Randal and Juanita are very positive and resilient about the situation, but the best thing we can all do is support our local farmers to help them get through it.

Shopping Cart

The Sovereign Foods shopping cart has just had a major overhaul! It now lists everything we sell in pre-packaged sizes. Also it's now easier to find what you're looking for with a new search option and category tabs.

Once you've finished adding items to your order, you can then choose when you'd like your order packed, and whether you would like delivery or pick up. For those in Brisbane that means no delivery fees, otherwise we can also get our fantastic range of produce to you nation wide.

Albany Creek Ethical Groceries Group

This week Sovereign Foods was very happy to help set up a new buyer's group operating out of Albany Creek Uniting Church. This group is run by The ORCA Project, from Wesley Mission Queensland, which is a program to help young people with a disability.

We don't have a picture of the whole team, but everyone did a great job packing boxes for all the new members of their buyer's group!

The Sovereign Foods store is open from 1pm today in Moorooka, and member's orders available to pack from 4pm.

Also for something a little different, here's a recipe from a friend of Sovereign Food's that can be used with some of our beautiful produce!

Mixed Lentil Salad

1 ½ cups of any type of lentils of your choice, soaked separately overnight. (eg. split yellow mung bean, whole green lentils, split or whole chick peas, split green peas, black eyed beans etc -- the options are endless!)

1 cup mung bean sprouts (optional)

1 or 2 green chillies finely diced (optional )

2 tbsp very finely diced red capsicum

1 small red onion finely chopped

1 large firm tomato finely diced

1 bunch fresh coriander, washed and finely chopped

A third cup lemon juice (or lime, or ½ & ½)

A quarter cup olive oil

1 level tsp salt

1 level tsp coarse black pepper

Half a tsp cumin powder

A good pinch of red chilli flakes (optional)

½ - 1 tsp fresh grated ginger

Finely grated lime rind ( zest)

Mix all well together in a large bowl, add all above ingredients except the lentils

Mix well.

Boil some water (approx. 2 cups) with 2 tsp stock powder and some salt.

Add each type of lentil or bean separately and boil till just done but still firm. Drain and allow to cool. Be careful not to overcook lentils. Once cool add to above mixture and stir well. Chill till required.

Lots of exciting news this week, first up, we have a brand new website! If you haven't visited in a while, please do! We have a new online shop, so if you can't make it to the markets, or our store in Moorooka, we will deliver to you!

Thor has added a HUGE amount of information to everything we're selling on the website. Just click a product to read more about it. We want everyone to know where our food comes from, and about the farmers who grow it. It really is amazing produce we get to share with you. We would love it if you could share this post with others who might be interested. We really do rely on your support to let people know what we're up to!
