Sovereign Foods is a Brisbane-based social enterprise building a better food system; one that’s local, transparent, and grounded in ecological and community wellbeing. We work directly with Australian farmers to bring you organically grown, minimally processed pantry staples that honour the soil they came from and the people who grew them.

We believe good food should be Fresh, Fair and Affordable. Every bag you buy supports a more transparent, sustainable future—where farmers are known, supply chains are short, and real food is within reach for everyone.

Khorasan grain

This is the first time we’ve tried the Khorasan grain. We find it more flavoursome and a different texture. It’s lighter somehow although still whole grain. I’m making bread, cakes and scones with it. I always add fruit, nuts and/ or oats to my cakes etc. they are turning out yummy.

We all need to focus on supporting a better food system which will provide environmentally organically grown, pantry staples that are better for our health & ensuring long term sustainability for the future. We ordered the Organic Currants which are the best quality currants we have ever had, they are much larger in size & not covered in oil, which is usually canola oil. Money well spent!

Strong Wheat Flour White Organic | Roller Milled 20kg

Our new season organic peanuts have arrived from Evan and Lois Blanch at Greenacres Organics, near Kingaroy in Queensland's South Burnett region.

The Blanch family has been growing peanuts for four generations, with Evan and Lois continuing that tradition through organic farming practices that focus on soil health, cover crops and crop rotation.

Alongside the new harvest, we're also pleased to introduce their Cold Pressed Peanut Oil. Made from their own organically grown peanuts and pressed by Plenty Foods, this unrefined oil retains the natural flavour and character of the peanuts.

Whether you're making your own peanut butter, roasting peanuts for a snack or adding a little peanut flavour to your cooking, it's a good time to enjoy this year's harvest.

We've had a bit of a gap open up in our hard wheat range. Our Scout wheat from Burrum Biodynamics has now finished for the season, while our next delivery of Calibre wheat has been delayed.

So we're pleased to have another Australian-grown organic hard wheat on the shelves: Sunco, grown in the Coonabarabran region of NSW and sourced for us by Geoff at Bio-Oz.

Sunco is an established Australian bread wheat variety, and this particular crop has tested at 12% protein, making it a useful option for home millers looking for wheat for sourdough, yeasted breads, pizza and other doughs where strength and structure matter.

It also gives us another Australian wheat variety to get to know. As we've seen across the grains we stock, variety is only part of the story. Season, growing conditions and the individual crop all influence how a wheat behaves once it reaches the mill and the dough.

Geoff has packed the grain for us at Bio-Oz in Parkes, and it's now available in 5kg and 20kg bags.

One of the grains our home-milling customers have asked us for most often is finally here: a good Australian-grown soft wheat.

Our new Beaufort Soft Red Wheat, grown by Chris and Sam Greenwood at Coleambally, NSW, has a protein of 8.5%, making it quite different from the stronger bread wheats we usually stock. For home millers, it gives you another tool in the cupboard: a softer wheat particularly suited to cakes, biscuits, pastries and other baking where tenderness matters more than maximum dough strength.

We discovered the Beaufort through our new relationship with Stu and Brad at Voyager Craft Malt, and that relationship has brought a few other interesting grains with it.

Alongside the Beaufort, we've added a Diastatic Malted Wheat for bread baking, a Roasted Non-Diastatic Malted Barley for colour and roasted flavour, and an ancient Hull-Less Ethiopian Black Barley grown by Chris and Sam on land currently in conversion.

It's a small collection, but one that opens up quite a few new possibilities for home millers and bakers.
